Below you can find the SWIFT codes for Portugal. Each Portuguese bank account has one which is used to identify it, and is used for international transfers to and from Portugal.

How Does the Portugal SWIFT Code Work?

This is how it looks:

AAAABBCC-DDD

Here is what it means:

SWIFT codes are like addresses for banks. They help banks talk to each other when they want to send or receive money.

  • In Portugal, SWIFT codes can either be 8 or 11 characters long.
  • The first 4 characters are for the bank code – like the name of the bank.
  • The next 2 characters are for the country code – like the country where the bank is located.
  • Then, there’s the location code, which is a fancy way of saying where the bank branch is. It’s made up of both letters and numbers.
  • Finally, the branch code is the last 3 characters. It’s like the specific address of the bank branch.

It’s important to remember that SWIFT codes are used all over the world and work the same way, no matter where you are. That’s how banks can talk to each other and send money internationally.

Transferring money to Portugal through SWIFT

If you need to send money to someone in Portugal through a bank using SWIFT, it might be expensive. This is because banks charge a lot of fees for the service. According to a recent study on “International Bank Transfer Fees & Costs,” banks usually take a percentage of the amount you want to transfer, which can be as high as 3%. On top of that, they charge a fixed amount, which can range from £/€/$ 10-30. Sometimes, intermediary banks can also add more fees, making the whole process more expensive.

However, there are better ways to transfer money that can save you money and provide good service. After researching on “Cheapest International Money Transfers,” we found that currency brokers are a good option. They are usually less expensive than banks and provide excellent customer service.

To understand this better, think about it like this. Imagine you have €100 and you want to send it to a friend in Portugal. If you use a bank, they might take up to €3 just for the transfer, plus another €10-30 as a fixed amount. That means your friend in Portugal might get as little as €67, and you might feel like you lost money. However, if you use a currency broker, they might only take €1 or €2 for the transfer, and your friend might get closer to the full amount of €100. This means more money for you and your friend!

So, if you need to send money to Portugal, don’t assume that using a bank is the only option. Currency brokers can be a better choice, and can help you save money while providing excellent service.
