Personal Experiences From Studying Abroad

Having studied and taught abroad many times myself, I have seen what these programs can provide to someone on a very personal level. For example, as a result of the programs that I did, I now speak four languages instead of my two native. Additionally, I have been hired to work all over the world as a result of the risk I took in studying abroad in France, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Sweden, Portugal, and South Korea. What this perspective gave me as a young American, was the chance to apply and be considered for a plethora of international opportunities that would have never surely crossed my path had I simply done the predicable route and study in America my whole academic career.

When I was first at my global escapades, it was something that was frowned upon or looked at as not valuable; however, I am elated to say that in recent years, these statistics are showing that cultures around the globe are embracing the importance of studying abroad. To date, the countries with the most students studying abroad are: the United States, England, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, China, South Korea, and Switzerland. Within these countries many students come to study Business, Economics, IT Programming, and Foreign Languages with the aspirations of bringing those skills to their home country.

What is fascinating about this data is where these students are primarily coming from to take study abroad opportunities. The countries sending the most students to study abroad are: China, India, South Korea, Germany, Saudi Arabia, France, United States, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Iran. As a result of this, there have been many international teaching jobs opened to those such as myself who wanted to find an entertaining way to live in many countries. Since many of these students are required to learn English at a University level, it is no surprise that schools have opened up all over the world providing English classes, which is wonderful for those English speaking students who were simply not quite done with their globe trotting.

Given the success of university and post-graduate study abroad programs, we have also began to see a trend of high school study abroad exchanges for one year. This has been a sensational addition to the study abroad experience that allows students to gain a global perspective at a younger age and to possibly learn another language.

On a personal note, studying abroad benefited my life in a tremendous way. It is wonderful to see so many diverse programs out there and also to see that so many international students are taking advantage of these opportunities.
